ASK Racing travelled to Kirkistown in Northern Ireland for a double header of the 2009 HRCA Historic Racing Championship last weekend. With team boss Alan Kessie on holidays, the team’s Gryphon C73 was not entered but the team fielded three of its 1970s Modsports cars. Vinnie O’Reilly and Matt Dunne drove their usual 1480cc lightweight MG Midgets, whilst Leo Nulty drove his 998cc Davrian Imp Saloon, which was completely rebuilt from the ground up over the winter by ASK Racing at their Dublin base. Despite driving the smallest engined cars on the grid, the trio qualified mid grid, ahead of many more powerful cars, including two MGBGT V8s and a few Lotus variants. In race one, Nulty managed to climb to 7th overall, with O”Reilly in 9th having come out tops in a great battle with Garth Maxwell’s MGBGT V8 and Clive Brandon’s twin cam Lotus Europa. Matt Dunne crossed the line 13th, just ahead of Pete Murray’s BMW M5! In race two, Nulty’s Imp was swamped off the line and he fell back down the field. The Imp was performing superbly though, and he battled back up through the pack to replicate his earlier result, crossing the line in 7th. “We gave some of the V8s something to think about today” said Leo afterwards, “and we only have a fraction of their power, I think we can spring a surprise when the championship moves back to Mondello National Circuit next month!”
ASK Racing’s next race meeting is at The Phoenix Park Motor Races on August 8/9 |
