ASK Racing had in interesting weekend at the opening Easter Meeting at Mondello Park last weekend. Having worked on Des Cahill’s ex Vic Lee Racing works BTCC Peugeot 406 Coupe over the last number of weeks, they brought the car to Mondello for a shakedown and test on the Friday. Des, an ex Dunlop Supercar competitor, completed some 30 laps without problem and was delighted with the car. “I was going to sell the car”, he said, “but the ASK guys were great and I had a really enjoyable day, I might just hang onto it now!” The car did not race at the weekend but was on display in ASK racing’s pitlane garage and attracted lots of attention, not least from the competitors in the new ITCC class, for which the 406 is eligible! ASK racing also ran two of their modsport Midgets, one for HRCA class regular Matt Dunne and one for newcomer Mark Kelly. Kelly, a prominent member of the Leinster Motor Club and sometime Clerk of the Course, marked himself out as one to watch by qualifying on the second row of the grid in his first ever race, behind two V8 Sunbeam Tigers and a 3.9 MGBGT V8! Matt Dunne was right behind Mark, and lined up fifth overall. Dunne’s experience showed when the light changed, however as he made the better start to lead the pair down to turn one when the lights changed. At the end of lap one, Kelly spun at Dunlop corner “My own fault”, he grinned later, “The guys told me to lets the tyres warm up before starting to push, I just got excited!”. He recovered, though, and set about charging back up through the grid. At the chequered flag, Matt Dunne was fifth overall, having narrowly lost out in a scrap with Ian George’s slick shod Mini, whilst Mark Kelly had a great race, charging all the way back up to sixth after his earlier indiscretion. ASK Racing will be back at Mondello Park for round two of the HRCA series on May 9th, when team regulars Vinnie O’Reilly’s Midget and Leo Nulty’s Imp make their 2010 debuts! |
