ASK racing had another successful weekend at Mondello Park on May 8/9. With 8 cars running in two classes it was always going to be busy for the North Dublin based preparation experts. Philip Jones had borrowed Tom Hallissey’s Porsche for the Porsche Challenge and proved its worth by taking pole position and two wins for the team. Main interest in this race though was on two novices. Martin O’Sullivan, (son of longtime Mondello scrutineer Richie,) took the wheel of one of the team’s Porsche 944s and alongside him on the grid was 16 year old Megan Kessie, daughter of team owner Alan, driving the team 924. Jones, making his usual stunning starts, took two dominant wins, delighting both driver and team, whilst Megan and Martin battled throughout, with Martin just crossing the line ahead on both occasions. Megan will compete in the new Ginetta Junior Championship which starts next month, and will of course be run by ASK Racing! minute around the 1.24 mile circuit to claim pole position in his Gryphon C73. Leo Nulty’s Imp, which the team had liveried in Vivian Candy’s Team Marlboro/Captain America’s colours during the week, qualified sixth, and first in class, with team mates Matt Dunne and Vinnie O’Reilly, both in modsport MG Midgets, not far behind. When the lights changed, The Gryphon immediately shot away but unfortunately, a radiator hose let go and Alan had no choice but to retire from a strong lead. He watched the rest of the action from the pitwall and must have been happy to see his cars take all three places on the class three podium for the first time.
